The Man in the Mask: An Orkney Murder is a three part true crime documentary investigating the 1994 murder of Bangladeshi waiter Shamsuddin Mahmood in the Orkney Islands (the first murder there in 25 years). The series follows journalist Hazel Martin as she re-examines the case, which led to the conviction of Michael Ross, who was only 15 at the time of the killing and still maintains his innocence.
Exploring the night of the murder in Kirkwall and the early police investigation, it examines how Ross became the prime suspect, featuring witness accounts, archive material, and new interviews that revisit the evidence surrounding the shooting.
The documentary is presented as a tense re-investigation of a controversial case, looking at possible racial motives, disputed witness testimony and unanswered questions that continued for years after the murder.
