DI Ruth Calder is speaking with Malcolm Kidd, a nervous young man clutching a shotgun. His brother’s lifeless body lies on the floor between them. Outside, Tosh and the rest of the team wait. This standoff can’t go on forever, but how will it end?
Later that night, Tosh attends a birthday party for a friend and witnesses an argument between married couple Annie and Ian Bett. Their nine-year-old son, Noah, quietly tells Tosh that his parents are separating. Before leaving, Annie pulls Tosh aside and arranges to meet with her the next morning, saying she has something important to discuss. Annie and Noah are staying with John Harris, a mussel farmer, and his two sons, Patrick and Fergus. But when Tosh arrives at John’s place the next day, Annie’s car is nowhere to be seen, and her phone goes unanswered. Where are Annie and Noah?
